Who is Israel, and Who Cares?

Romans 11 teaches that what we believe about Israel ultimately reflects what we believe about God—His promises, His plan, and His faithfulness. The Bible, not culture or opinion, must be our authority in understanding Israel’s role. Scripture shows that God made a literal, unconditional covenant with Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and David to bless their descendants and the world through them. This covenant included the promise of a lasting throne and kingdom, partly fulfilled in Christ’s first coming and awaiting full fulfillment in His return. Prophets like Jeremiah and Ezekiel foretold Israel’s dispersion and regathering, visions that began coming true with their modern restoration but await spiritual revival when they recognize their Messiah.
While believers in Christ share spiritually in Israel’s blessings through faith, they do not replace Israel’s national identity. The New Testament affirms both truths: Gentile believers are grafted into God’s covenant blessings, yet Israel remains distinct in God’s plan. Paul makes it clear in Romans 11 that God has not cast away His people; their current blindness is temporary, lasting only until the fullness of the Gentiles comes in. Then, “all Israel shall be saved.” The rebirth of the modern State of Israel in 1948 demonstrates God’s providence and faithfulness, though Israel’s spiritual restoration is still to come. Christians are called to bless Israel, pray for her peace, and oppose antisemitism—not because every political action is righteous, but because God’s covenant and character remain unchanging.
Ultimately, caring about Israel matters because it magnifies the faithfulness of God. If He keeps His promises to Israel despite their failures, we can trust Him to keep His promises to us. The same God who brought Israel back to her land will bring believers safely to glory. Through Israel came the Scriptures, the prophets, and the Savior—Jesus Christ—through whom salvation came to the world. Honoring God’s faithfulness to Israel is really honoring His grace toward all humanity. The story of Israel is a story of redemption and restoration—a reminder that the God who never gave up on His chosen people will never give up on those who trust in Him.
